The Refrigerator Saga

Let me start by saying should you ever find yourself in a position that you think your refrigerator may be dying, it is highly recommended that you take proactive measures and get yourself a new fridge before the current one dies, trust me I have now learned this from experience. This is the story of the nightmare associated with our refrigerator situation....

It started two weeks ago, the fridge had been making some strange noises, so Mike decided to make a phone call and get someone in to come take a look at it. The repair guy came and cleaned out the coils, or something like that, and it did not appear from that visit that anything else major was going on. He charged us for the labor ($125) but that did not solve the problems, the fridge continued to make the noise and we got him to come back. On his next trip back he replaced one of the motors in the fridge, that was another $60 but that was supposed to solve the problem since the other one was only working intermittently. Only that didn't solve the problem either, so now we called him back for a third time, this time was to put a "surge protector" on the motor or something like that, I'm not really sure of all the technical terms he used, this was on Friday. When he left that day he said it would take 24 hours for it to get back to "normal" and reboot itself, sadly, we never got to normal. While it kicked on a bit it was far from getting back to normal. We waited the 24 hours but we could already tell something was not right things were getting progressively worse and more and more defrosted by the minute.

By the time Sunday rolled around, Mike and I decided we better start shopping for a fridge proactively since things were not looking good. We headed over to Best Buy, Home Depot and Lowe's all conveniently located next to one another within a one mile strip. Best Buy had the best prices and selection, Home Depot did not have a lot to pick from and def none that were in our price range. We were also shopping in advance since Mike was leaving on Monday to go to California for the week for work, which would've left me on my own to pick out a fridge, I was glad we could go together so I knew what to get if it came down to it.

When Monday came and we finally got a call back from the repair guy, he confirmed what we were already thinking, the fridge was beyond repair at this point and there was nothing else that he could do to fix it beyond getting a new condensor for $700, which is not worth it. Now I needed to get myself back to best buy to order the new fridge and hopefully get it delivered right away. By the time I got to best buy that afternoon at first the computer was showing no delivery available until Thursday, the one day that week I had to be in the office, or Monday, I couldn't live a whole week without a fridge. Thankfully after waiting on hold they could bring it the next day, although I with my luck it would come during the one half hour of the day I had an important call, but it didn't.

I spent Monday night cleaning out the old fridge and throwing away so much food, that killed me the most. I can't even begin to explain how much good food I had to throw away because it had defrosted and wasn't safe to eat, that was painful to watch the food and the money spent on the food go out the door. Once that was done I was ready for delivery of our new fridge. The fridge arrived Tuesday afternoon as scheduled, that was a pain too, I had to take down Rocky's gate for the kitchen which took plaster down from the wall, that wasn't fun either but at least it was here.

Once the fridge was in and the left I went to go inspect it, right away I noticed two dents right on the front of it!!!! It was very noticeable, I couldn't believe that a brand new fridge had two dents on it, what a pain. Now I had to call Best Buy and see what our options were. They were very nice about it and it wasn't a problem but we'd have to repeat the process again, which meant going to the store, "returning" this one and scheduling another delivery date. I decided to wait for Mike to get back to go do all that. On Friday night we headed back to Best Buy to go through the process, the next fridge was scheduled to be delivered on Tuesday, of course the one day Mike was gone again for work leaving me to handle it again. In the meantime I'd had no groceries the whole week living off whatever crap was in the house and no fresh food which was annoying too. I wasn't looking forward to going through the transfer again of whatever we did have left, which wasn't much, and getting the new fridge set up.

At least the second delivery went more smoothly and it wasn't dented. Although the delivery guy tried to tell me that he'd give me just a new door versus the whole fridge, but I said give me the whole thing. This one thankfully wasn't dented and I went about setting the whole thing up. This was such a process, I was not a happy camper at all during this whole thing. I'm just glad it over with now and we have a new working fridge and I have all my fresh produce again. I hope to never have to go through that pain in the neck again! The moral is one, don't wait for your fridge to die to get a new one, and two, make sure the fridge you get isn't dented!
